Horizon Forbidden West includes a Co-Pilot system that allows a second controller with mirrored controls to operate the same character. Two people can contribute inputs during one play session instead of passing a single controller back and forth.
The feature can allow a trusted partner to assist with camera movement, combat, traversal, menu navigation, or another demanding action. It does not divide the game into fixed roles and does not create a separate second player character.
How Co-Pilot Works
When Co-Pilot is enabled, a second controller can send the same gameplay inputs as the primary controller. Either player can act, and the game combines those inputs for the one on-screen character.
One player might handle most movement while the other assists only during aiming. Another pair might alternate according to fatigue, pain, processing load, or the demands of a particular encounter.
Shared Assistance Without Leaving the Session
Traditional controller passing interrupts play and transfers full control. Co-Pilot allows assistance to happen immediately while the primary player remains involved.
This can preserve agency when a player can perform many actions but encounters a barrier with one mechanic. The second person can contribute only when requested rather than automatically taking over the complete sequence.
Motor and Cognitive Uses
Shared input may reduce the number of simultaneous actions one person must perform. A partner could move the camera while the primary player handles movement, or activate a hard-to-reach input when needed.
It can also support learning and orientation. A partner can demonstrate a control, correct the camera, or help recover from a confusing situation without ending the player’s participation.
Limits of Mirrored Controls
Because both controllers map to the same character, conflicting simultaneous inputs can interfere with one another. Players may need to agree on when assistance will be provided.
Co-Pilot does not create independent control zones, automatically simplify menus, or guarantee compatibility with every third-party device. Its usefulness depends on the controllers, system configuration, and the way the two players coordinate.
Related Control Options
The game also includes extensive remapping, left-handed support, hold-or-toggle choices, adjustable aim assistance, automatic sprinting, and settings that slow the game while the weapon wheel is open.
Co-Pilot can be combined with these options. A player could use a customized layout and toggle aiming while a second controller provides occasional camera or combat assistance.
Choosing How to Share Control
The feature does not prescribe who is the primary player or which actions belong to each person. Pairs can build their own arrangement and change it as the demands of play change.
That flexibility is the central accessibility value: assistance can be partial, immediate, and negotiated instead of requiring the complete transfer of play.
