What Grounded’s Arachnophobia Safe Mode Changes—and What It Does Not

Spiders are central threats in Grounded. Because the player has been reduced to the size of an insect, ordinary backyard spiders become enormous moving creatures that can appear during exploration, pursue the player, and participate in combat. Their size, animation, anatomy, proximity, and sounds can make encounters difficult or impossible for some players with arachnophobia or related sensory access needs.

Arachnophobia Safe Mode changes how spiders are visually represented. Rather than providing a single on-or-off replacement, the setting offers a progression of six positions, beginning with the original spider presentation and gradually removing visual characteristics commonly associated with spiders.

At its highest setting, the creature is represented using simplified shapes and materials instead of a detailed spider body. The underlying enemy has not been removed. Its location, behaviour, combat function, and gameplay difficulty remain intact.

This distinction is essential. Arachnophobia Safe Mode is a sensory-presentation option, not a difficulty setting, enemy-removal feature, or guarantee that every spider-related trigger will disappear. It reduces selected characteristics while preserving the mechanical role spiders have within the game.

How the Six Levels Progressively Change Spiders

The setting provides six positions when the unchanged presentation is included. Obsidian describes the progression in terms of increasingly substantial visual simplification.

At the first position, spiders retain their standard appearance. The next position reduces the number of visible legs to four. A further increase removes all spider legs. The next stage also removes the fangs.

At the two highest positions, the transformation becomes more abstract. Spider legs remain absent, while the original body mesh is replaced with simple shapes. The maximum setting additionally replaces the creature’s materials with simple colours and shiny textures.

This progression allows players to stop at an intermediate level rather than accepting only the original spider or the most abstract version. Someone who is primarily affected by leg movement may find that reducing or removing the legs is sufficient. Another player may still find the remaining body shape or fangs strongly spiderlike and may require greater abstraction.

The levels are cumulative rather than a collection of independent checkboxes. Players cannot use the documented setting to remove fangs while retaining all legs, independently disable individual eyes, or construct a custom spider representation from separate visual options.

Why Progressive Abstraction Matters

A single replacement model assumes that all players respond to the same characteristics in the same way. Arachnophobia does not necessarily operate that uniformly. Features such as the number and movement of legs, visible fangs, body proportions, eyes, surface texture, animation, scale, proximity, and sound may contribute differently to an individual response.

Xbox described user research in which reported fear and disgust increased as textures, additional eyes, and audio effects were added to spider representations. Obsidian used that research when developing a range of increasingly spiderlike or less spiderlike presentations.

The resulting setting does not require the player to declare whether they “have” arachnophobia or meet any diagnostic threshold. A player can adjust the representation based on what they can tolerate. The same option may also be useful for someone who experiences disgust sensitivity, insect-related sensory distress, nightmares, panic responses, or difficulty processing rapid multi-legged movement without identifying with a particular diagnosis.

Qualified language remains important. Simplifying a spider model may help some players, but it cannot be assumed to make the creature comfortable or accessible for everyone. A floating collection of shapes may still move like the original enemy, approach unexpectedly, produce recognizable sounds, or be identified by the game as a spider.

Sensory Reduction Is Not Trigger Removal

Arachnophobia Safe Mode reduces selected visual characteristics. It does not remove the concept of spiders from Grounded. The creatures still occupy the backyard, participate in the game’s ecology, threaten the player, and remain relevant to combat and progression.

The simplified form also retains movement. Removing visible legs can eliminate the specific sight of multiple articulated limbs, but it does not make the enemy stationary. The abstract body still travels through the environment and can move quickly toward the player.

Scale is another remaining factor. Spiders are large relative to the shrunken player character. Replacing detailed anatomy with rounded shapes does not necessarily change the amount of screen space the enemy occupies or the sensation of being approached by something much larger than the character.

Surprise encounters can remain difficult. The setting does not document that spiders must be announced before entering view, prevented from appearing in low-light areas, or kept at a comfortable distance. An abstract creature may still emerge unexpectedly or attack from outside the player’s current focus.

References to spiders may also remain in names, objectives, inventory items, dialogue, or contextual information. A visual-safe mode is not equivalent to a content filter that rewrites every spider-related element.

Appearance Changes Without Reduced Difficulty

Obsidian explicitly states that gameplay and difficulty remain unchanged when Arachnophobia Safe Mode is increased. The modified creature is not weaker, slower, less aggressive, or easier to defeat because its model is simpler.

The setting therefore differs from an enemy-removal mode. Spiders continue to occupy their usual gameplay role, and the player must still avoid, escape, or fight them. It also differs from a skip option because encounters are not automatically completed.

This approach preserves mechanical consistency between players using different visual representations. In multiplayer, using a simplified model does not imply that the affected player has selected easier combat or changed the shared world’s enemy behaviour.

However, preserving difficulty has access consequences. A player who can tolerate a simplified spider image may still face barriers involving reaction time, targeting, combat precision, threat tracking, or rapid movement. Arachnophobia Safe Mode does not address those demands by itself.

The abstract form may even change how combat information is perceived. Legs, fangs, body orientation, and detailed animation can provide visual clues about direction and movement. Removing those features reduces spider resemblance, but it may also reduce some of the visual structure a player uses to interpret an enemy’s pose.

Simplification should therefore not be confused with universal visual clarity. Less anatomical detail can reduce one barrier while making another aspect of the creature’s motion or orientation more ambiguous for a particular player.

How the Setting Differs from a Conventional Content Warning

A content warning informs the player that potentially distressing material is present. It can help someone make an informed choice, but it does not alter the material itself. Arachnophobia Safe Mode changes the presentation during play.

The option also differs from a pre-encounter warning. It is not designed primarily to notify the player that a spider is about to appear. Instead, it changes how spiders are rendered whenever they are encountered.

Neither approach completely replaces the other. A player may still want advance information about the frequency, intensity, or narrative importance of spider encounters before deciding whether the available visual abstraction is sufficient. The setting demonstrates that modifying content and describing content are separate accessibility functions.

How It Differs from Removing Particular Animations

The documented levels progressively alter body components, meshes, and materials. Obsidian does not describe them as separate controls for disabling individual movements such as scuttling, jumping, lunging, or attack animations.

This matters because movement can be a significant part of a phobic or sensory response. A creature made from rounded shapes may be visually less spiderlike when stationary but become more recognizable through its movement pattern.

The setting should therefore be understood as model abstraction rather than complete animation substitution. It changes what is being animated more than it eliminates the enemy’s movement.

Likewise, the highest level is not an option to replace spiders with an unrelated harmless animal. The simplified shapes remain attached to the same hostile game entity. This preserves gameplay information but can also preserve contextual associations.

What the Official Documentation Says About Audio

Xbox’s account of the feature’s development says the team investigated audio effects alongside eyes and textures, and describes Arachnophobia Mode as altering spider appearance and limiting audio effects. This establishes that sound was considered during the design process.

Obsidian’s detailed accessibility list, however, defines the six selectable levels through visual changes: leg reduction, fang removal, simplified meshes, and simplified materials. It does not provide a level-by-level description of which spider sounds are reduced, replaced, or retained.

It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the mode as removing all spider sounds. Players for whom skittering, attack sounds, creature vocalizations, or sudden audio cues are the primary barrier should not assume that the highest visual setting creates a spider-free soundscape.

The game includes broader audio controls, but lowering an entire sound category may affect other information as well. Reducing effects volume can make a trigger quieter while also reducing access to environmental and combat cues contained in the same mix.

Volume reduction is also different from frequency filtering or selective removal. A quieter sound retains its acoustic characteristics. Arachnophobia Safe Mode should not be represented as a dedicated frequency filter or a complete audio-trigger customization system.

Using Arachnophobia Safe Mode with Other Settings

Players can combine Arachnophobia Safe Mode with other options rather than treating it as a complete preset. Grounded allows settings to be changed from the loading screen or during play, and Obsidian states that in-game changes are applied automatically.

This makes it possible to begin at a highly simplified level, assess the result, and adjust it without committing to one representation for an entire save. A player who is uncertain about their response may prefer to start with the maximum abstraction rather than testing the original spider model first.

Highlight Objects can change which interactable objects receive visual emphasis. Larger text and reticle adjustments can improve the readability of interface or targeting elements. Subtitles can be set to dialogue only, all supported sounds and voices, or none, with adjustable text size and an optional dark background.

Controller vibration can be disabled if sudden tactile feedback adds to distress. Toggle Sprint can reduce the need to hold an input while escaping, while Toggle Crouch can remove another sustained button requirement. Wide Interaction allows nearby objects to be used without looking directly at them, though it does not automate combat with spiders.

These settings address different barriers. Disabling vibration will not make the spider less visually detailed. Simplifying its model will not reduce the need to aim or move. Toggle Sprint changes an input demand without altering enemy speed. Combining options may provide a more workable experience than relying on Arachnophobia Safe Mode alone.

Multiplayer Does Not Eliminate the Encounter

Grounded supports cooperative play, and another player may be able to assist with combat or resource collection. Cooperative support does not remove the sensory presentation from the affected player’s screen. Arachnophobia Safe Mode remains relevant even if someone else handles the encounter.

A simplified model can also be useful when different players in the same group have different tolerances. Because the setting changes presentation rather than enemy statistics, one player can use abstraction without converting the shared encounter into a different difficulty level.

Cooperative play is not a substitute for accessible participation. Asking another person to complete every spider-related section may exclude the affected player from exploration, combat, or progression. Arachnophobia Safe Mode attempts to preserve participation, but its remaining visual, auditory, and movement cues may still make some encounters inaccessible.

Platform Availability

Arachnophobia Safe Mode is a built-in setting rather than a PC mod. Obsidian originally documented its accessibility features for console and PC players. Following the Fully Yoked update, Grounded is available across Xbox and PC as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

The accessibility page places the option under the game’s general settings. Because the feature affects presentation rather than a save’s underlying difficulty, players can adjust it without beginning a new game.

Players should make sure they are consulting information for the original Grounded rather than assuming that documentation for Grounded 2 describes identical levels or behaviour. Although the sequel also includes an Arachnophobia Safe Mode during its ongoing development, it is a separate game with its own updates.

A Focused Form of Sensory Customization

Obsidian’s official accessibility feature list describes a clear progression from unchanged spiders through reduced anatomy to simple shapes and materials. This gives players more control than a binary show-or-hide option and acknowledges that different visual characteristics can create different levels of distress.

The setting’s limits are equally important. It does not remove spiders, change their difficulty, stop their movement, guarantee advance warning, or document complete removal of spider audio. At maximum abstraction, the player is still encountering the same hostile game entity through a less spiderlike visual form.

Access needs vary, and no degree of model simplification can guarantee that a spider encounter will be tolerable. Arachnophobia Safe Mode may reduce visual and sensory barriers for some players while leaving movement, sound, scale, surprise, combat, and conceptual associations that remain inaccessible for others.
