How Assassin’s Creed Shadows Extends Screen Narration Beyond Menus

Screen narration in games is often described as menu narration. A synthesized voice reads the name of the highlighted option, its current value, and sometimes instructions for changing it. That can make a settings screen or inventory usable without reading every visual label, but it does not necessarily provide access once the player leaves the menu.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows gives its narration system a broader stated scope. Ubisoft says that Screen Narration covers most menu items as well as many heads-up display modules and time-sensitive elements. This distinction matters because an open-world action game communicates a large amount of information while the player is moving, exploring, fighting, and making decisions.

The feature does not turn the complete game world into continuous spoken description. It does not identify every object, narrate every character movement, or automatically explain the safest response to an enemy. Its role is to speak supported interface information that would otherwise be presented visually.

That places Screen Narration between conventional menu narration and a comprehensive gameplay screen reader. It extends spoken access into more parts of active play while retaining meaningful coverage limitations.

What conventional menu narration provides

Menus in a large open-world game can contain settings, equipment, quests, maps, character information, tutorials, objectives, inventories, progression systems, and contextual actions. Navigating them visually requires the player to locate the current focus, read its label, understand its value, and recognize whether more information is available.

Menu narration can speak supported focus changes and interface content as the player moves between options. This may allow a blind or low-vision player to adjust settings, review information, and make selections without relying solely on text size, contrast, or magnification.

It may also support players who can see the interface but find dense visual menus difficult to process. Hearing a focused item spoken can reduce the need to search through several nearby labels or repeatedly reread text to determine which option is active.

Narration is different from enlarging the interface. Larger text and icons change visual presentation but still require visual reading. Narration transfers supported information into speech. The two can be combined when a player benefits from both visual and auditory access.

Why narrating the HUD is a separate challenge

A heads-up display is not a static list. Its modules can appear, disappear, update, change colour, fill or empty, and compete with movement in the game world. Health, tools, abilities, objectives, detection information, contextual prompts, and status changes may all be presented while the player is doing something else.

Narrating this information requires more than reading whichever menu item has keyboard or controller focus. The game has to determine that a supported HUD event has changed, decide whether it should be spoken, and present it without overwhelming the player or obscuring more urgent audio.

Ubisoft states that Assassin’s Creed Shadows can narrate many HUD modules. The word “many” is important. It indicates broader coverage than menus alone without claiming that every visual component is spoken.

A supported HUD module may provide access to information that a player would otherwise need to monitor visually. Narration can reduce reliance on recognising a small icon, reading text over a detailed background, or noticing that a visual status has changed.

It does not necessarily explain the surrounding three-dimensional environment. Speaking a supported objective or status value is different from identifying a guard standing beside a doorway, describing the shape of a roof, or announcing every climbable surface.

Time-sensitive information changes the value of narration

Some interface information remains available until the player chooses to dismiss it. Other information appears briefly or becomes useful only if it is understood quickly. Ubisoft specifically identifies time-sensitive elements as part of the Screen Narration system’s coverage.

This may include supported information that appears during active gameplay and cannot be reviewed at leisure in the same way as a settings page. Speaking it can reduce the need to shift visual attention away from the game world, locate a temporary message, read it, and return attention to the current action before the opportunity passes.

Time-sensitive narration is not the same as extending a response window. The information may become audible, but the game event can continue at its existing speed. A player must still hear the narration, understand it, decide what to do, and provide an input before the relevant situation changes.

This creates a potential trade-off. Spoken information takes time. A visual symbol can sometimes be recognised almost instantly by someone who can see and already understands it, whereas a narrated message unfolds word by word. If several supported events occur in rapid succession, narration can compete for time and attention.

The usefulness of narrated urgent information therefore depends on coverage, message length, prioritisation, and the pace of the underlying game. It can make a previously unavailable cue perceivable without guaranteeing that every associated action becomes manageable.

Narration is not audio description

Assassin’s Creed Shadows also includes audio description for cinematics. Screen Narration and audio description both provide spoken information, but they serve different purposes.

Screen Narration reads supported interface content. Its subject is the information system around play: menu items, HUD modules, values, prompts, and other interface elements.

Audio description communicates visual events within a cinematic. It may describe actions, expressions, locations, or other meaningful visual details that are not conveyed by dialogue and sound alone.

Enabling narration does not mean that all visual storytelling will be described. Conversely, audio description for cinematics does not make menus or HUD information navigable. A blind or low-vision player may need both systems enabled because they address different layers of the experience.

Audio description is also not continuous environmental narration during ordinary exploration. Ubisoft identifies it specifically for cinematics. The game should not be assumed to describe every movement, architectural feature, object, or non-cinematic visual event.

Narration is not the audio-cue system

Ubisoft separately lists audio cues and an Audio Glossary. These systems provide nonvisual signs and feedback for navigation and pathfinding. They are not simply another name for Screen Narration.

A spoken interface message uses language to report supported information. An audio cue can communicate through pitch, rhythm, position, repetition, or another designed sound. It may indicate a direction or help the player locate a route without speaking a sentence.

The Audio Glossary gives players a way to learn and review supported cue meanings. This is valuable because an unfamiliar sound is not automatically informative. A player needs to know what it represents and how its changes relate to the environment.

Screen Narration and audio cues can therefore work together. Narration may identify an objective, status, or interface option, while a navigation cue helps the player orient toward a relevant location. Neither necessarily replaces the other.

How narration may support cognitive access

Although Screen Narration is strongly associated with blind and low-vision access, speech output may also support some players with cognitive, reading, attention, or visual-processing barriers.

Hearing the focused menu item can help clarify which option is selected when several similar controls appear close together. Spoken values may reduce the need to remember the relationship between a slider’s position and its meaning. Narration can also provide a second sensory channel when visual information becomes difficult to track against a detailed background.

This does not mean that speech is inherently simpler. Listening requires attention, language processing, working memory, and the ability to separate narration from dialogue, music, environmental audio, and accessibility cues.

Players who are easily overwhelmed by overlapping audio may find extensive narration fatiguing. Someone with auditory-processing difficulties may understand a persistent visual label more easily than a brief spoken message. The benefit depends on the individual and on how narration is combined with the game’s other audio.

The game includes separate audio sliders, which may help players balance different parts of the soundscape. However, separate volume control does not prevent two messages from occurring close together or eliminate the cognitive demand of deciding which sound requires attention.

HUD customization can complement narration

Assassin’s Creed Shadows includes HUD customization alongside Screen Narration. Ubisoft says players can turn HUD elements on or off individually or collectively, use presets or shortcuts, adjust opacity, resize text and icons, and add backgrounds to improve readability.

These options can complement narration in different ways. A low-vision player may retain the modules they can use visually, enlarge their contents, add contrast, and use narration for information that remains difficult to read.

A player who experiences visual clutter may remove unnecessary HUD modules while keeping narration for selected supported information. Reducing visible elements can lower visual load, but it does not automatically reduce spoken output unless narration behaviour corresponds to the hidden modules.

Removing every HUD element is also not the same as making the interface cognitively simpler. If important information becomes available only through speech, the player must remember it after the narration ends. A visible module can provide persistent reference in a way that a spoken message cannot.

The strongest configuration may therefore be mixed rather than exclusively visual or auditory. Persistent information can remain visible in an adjusted form, while narration supplies additional access to focus changes, values, or events that are difficult to perceive.

Conversation logs address information that narration cannot preserve

Ubisoft also lists a Conversation Log that allows players to review lines from the beginning to the end of a dialogue. This is separate from Screen Narration but can address one of speech output’s practical limitations: spoken information is temporary.

If dialogue overlaps with narration, an accessibility cue, environmental noise, or another voice, the player may miss part of what was said. A conversation log creates a persistent record of supported dialogue that can be reviewed after the moment has passed.

The log may help deaf and hard-of-hearing players, people with auditory-processing differences, and players who need more time to read or interpret dialogue. It does not necessarily preserve every narration message or every non-dialogue sound.

Screen Narration makes supported interface information audible. The Conversation Log makes supported dialogue reviewable. They should not be treated as interchangeable systems.

Screen narration does not automate navigation

Hearing the name of an objective or a supported HUD element does not automatically reveal the route through the world. The player may still need to understand the map, identify a destination, find an entrance, avoid obstacles, control the camera, and perform traversal actions.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows includes Guided Exploration and audio navigation features that can address parts of this process. Guided Exploration streamlines certain systems and reduces some requirements associated with finding content. Audio cues can provide nonvisual navigation and pathfinding feedback.

These options can be combined with Screen Narration, but narration itself should not be described as route automation. It provides spoken interface access rather than taking control of the character or calculating every movement.

A player may be able to hear an objective through Screen Narration and still encounter inaccessible environmental navigation. Conversely, a player may follow an audio pathfinding cue while remaining unable to use an unsupported menu. Accessibility depends on how the separate systems connect.

The significance of “most” and “many”

Ubisoft describes Screen Narration as covering most menu items and many HUD modules and time-sensitive elements. Those qualifiers establish meaningful limits.

“Most” menu items is not the same as every menu, control, tooltip, map layer, inventory comparison, or contextual panel. “Many” HUD modules does not guarantee narration for every status, icon, prompt, warning, enemy indicator, resource, or temporary effect.

Partial coverage can create situations in which a player successfully navigates one part of the interface and then reaches an unsupported element. These gaps may be especially difficult to identify without sight because the player may not know that silent visual information has appeared.

Coverage can also change through updates, expansions, additional modes, and new interface systems. New content must be integrated with narration rather than assumed to inherit complete support automatically.

The existence of built-in narration is therefore important, but it should not be described as proof that the complete game is playable without sight. That conclusion would require broader evidence about menus, navigation, combat, stealth, puzzles, tutorials, maps, upgrades, and every required interaction.

Language and speech-output limitations

Screen narration depends on supported speech output and language configuration. The availability and quality of narration can vary by language, platform, voice implementation, and the text being read.

Names drawn from Japanese history, geography, titles, or terminology may be pronounced differently by a synthetic voice than they are in recorded dialogue. Pronunciation does not necessarily prevent understanding, but unfamiliar or inconsistent speech can increase cognitive effort.

Narration also cannot communicate purely visual formatting unless the game has assigned that formatting a spoken equivalent. Colour, spatial grouping, icon shape, emphasis, and relative position may carry meaning that is not preserved by reading only a label.

A player may need to adjust narration volume relative to dialogue, music, gameplay sounds, audio descriptions, and navigation cues. Increasing narration volume can improve audibility while making the total soundscape more intense.

Platforms and current availability

Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Mac computers with Apple silicon, and Amazon Luna. Ubisoft later released a Nintendo Switch 2 version in December 2025 and described it as including the post-launch improvements available at that time.

Interface behaviour, control prompts, speech availability, and input methods can differ between platforms. Nintendo Switch 2 additionally supports touchscreen use in menus, maps, the store, and hideout navigation, but touch control is an input alternative rather than a replacement for narration.

Players who depend on Screen Narration should verify the current implementation on their intended platform and language. General inclusion in an accessibility feature list does not establish identical speech behaviour in every hardware and localisation combination.

Spoken access across more than settings screens

The notable part of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ approach is not merely that it speaks menu options. Ubisoft states that narration reaches into many HUD modules and time-sensitive elements, allowing supported interface information to remain audible during more parts of active play.

The feature is documented in Ubisoft’s official Assassin’s Creed Shadows Accessibility Spotlight, alongside the separate audio-description, audio-cue, HUD-customization, conversation-log, and guidance systems that may be used with it.

Access needs vary. Screen Narration may reduce visual reading demands and make supported interface changes audible, but it does not narrate every element, describe ordinary gameplay continuously, automate routes, or by itself establish complete blind accessibility.
