R.E.P.O. surrounds its cooperative salvage gameplay with unstable screens, electrical effects, shaking interface elements, flickering equipment, distorted camera movement, particle-heavy weapons, and ominous droning audio. These effects reinforce its horror atmosphere, but they can also create barriers for players affected by flashing imagery, visual motion, vestibular discomfort, migraines, or particular repetitive sounds.

Epilepsy Safe R.E.P.O. is a community-created PC mod that changes or removes a large collection of these effects. Despite its name, it should not be treated as a guarantee that the game is medically safe for every player with epilepsy. Its practical value is more specific: the mod attempts to reduce numerous documented sensory triggers that appear throughout the game, including effects that cannot be addressed by lowering a single graphics setting.

The mod is also unusual because it does not concentrate exclusively on flashing lights. Its scope includes interface animation, camera interference, environmental effects, item and enemy feedback, low-frequency audio, and several moments when the game temporarily interferes with normal camera control. This makes it a closely connected collection of sensory-access modifications rather than a simple “disable flashes” switch.

What the mod changes

Epilepsy Safe R.E.P.O. modifies or removes effects associated with photosensitivity and motion sensitivity across many parts of the game. Some are persistent presentation choices, such as post-processing effects and a deliberately scratchy loading video. Others are brief reactions to damage, healing, upgrades, equipment use, enemy attacks, or extraction events.

The mod’s documented visual changes include selection boxes, loading effects, camera glitching, inventory-slot shaking, flashing menu elements, tutorial animations, flashlight flicker, player damage flashes, electrical effects around a player’s head, upgrade particles, and the deliberately choppy frame rate used on the map. It also addresses glitching or flashing displays associated with the cart, extraction point, shop, charging station, low-battery warning, and other machinery.

This breadth matters because photosensitive content is not limited to an obvious strobe light. Rapid changes in brightness can also be produced by damage overlays, electrical arcs, weapon discharges, animated displays, flickering environmental lights, particles, or post-processing that affects a large portion of the screen. A player may disable one conspicuous source and still encounter another during a later enemy attack or item interaction.

The mod therefore applies changes to numerous enemies, weapons, tools, and valuable objects. Its documented coverage includes attack effects from the Slow Walker, Hunter, Spewer, Mentalist, Loom, Clown, and other enemies. It also covers visual effects associated with firearms, stun equipment, mines, grenades, several staffs, the cart cannon and laser, the Prodzap, and the zero-gravity orb.

Several ordinary-looking salvage items receive changes as well. Examples listed by the developer include the music box, crystal ball, ice saw, cursed doll, boombox, uranium item, blender, traffic light, gumball machine, old camera, star wand, and jackhammer. That item-by-item coverage distinguishes the mod from a global brightness reduction. Instead of making the entire image darker, it targets effects attached to particular game objects and events.

Reducing camera interference is different from removing flashes

Some of the mod’s changes address motion rather than luminance. Camera glitching, crouching wobble, forced zoom, altered camera-aim behavior, and temporary changes to look speed can create discomfort even when they do not produce rapid flashes.

For example, the Thin Man’s attack can affect camera zoom, while the Hourglass can slow camera-look speed and the Crystal Ball can redirect camera aim. The mod alters these camera-control overrides. That may support players who experience nausea, vertigo, eyestrain, disorientation, or loss of spatial awareness when a game unexpectedly moves the view or changes the relationship between physical input and on-screen motion.

This is not the same as automating camera control. The player still navigates, looks around, and aims during ordinary play. The modification instead reduces selected occasions when the game overrides or destabilizes that control for an effect. It may preserve a more predictable connection between input and camera response without removing the game’s first-person navigation demands.

Similarly, changing tutorial UI shaking or inventory-slot movement does not simplify the underlying task. It changes how information is presented. A player still needs to understand the tutorial and manage inventory, but the relevant interface elements may remain more visually stable while doing so.

Audio support for humming and droning sounds

The mod also includes a musicogenic-sensitivity feature that mutes 180 sounds described by its developer as deep, humming, buzzing, or droning. This is more targeted than lowering the game’s master volume, because the intention is to suppress a particular group of sound characteristics while leaving other audio available.

Such filtering may help players who experience discomfort, neurological symptoms, sensory overload, or strong adverse reactions to particular repetitive or low-frequency sounds. It may also be useful when a continuous drone makes dialogue, proximity chat, or other gameplay cues harder to process.

However, muting a selected collection of clips is not the same as frequency filtering. A frequency filter changes portions of the audio spectrum wherever they occur. This mod instead appears to mute sounds that its developer has individually identified as deep, humming, buzzing, or droning. An unlisted sound could therefore remain, and a muted clip might contain atmospheric or informational content in addition to the problematic component.

The developer separately recommends muting the game’s music for players with musicogenic triggers. That recommendation indicates that the mod’s sound list should not be interpreted as complete protection from every possible audio trigger. Music is complex, and individual responses can depend on rhythm, pitch, repetition, intensity, context, or combinations of sounds that cannot be covered by one generalized setting.

Optional lighting changes

Epilepsy Safe R.E.P.O. includes an option for a toggleable flashlight. Replacing a sustained input with a toggle can reduce the need to hold a control continuously, although the mod’s main purpose is sensory rather than motor accessibility. The option may also give a player more deliberate control over when the flashlight changes state.

Another option allows lights throughout a level to turn back on after the final extraction. This may reduce the navigation and visual-processing demands created by an especially dark environment. Restored illumination can make room boundaries, obstacles, objects, and routes easier to distinguish, but it does not create a high-contrast mode or automatically identify hazards.

Additional lighting can also be a trade-off. A brighter environment may improve visibility for one player while increasing glare or reducing the horror atmosphere for another. Because access needs differ, a lighting modification is most useful when players can decide whether its benefit outweighs its sensory cost.

Client-side operation and the host limitation

The mod is identified on Thunderstore as client-side, and other members of a multiplayer group do not generally need to install it. That reduces the coordination required to use the accessibility changes: a player does not necessarily have to persuade every teammate to modify their own installation.

There is an important exception. The developer states that some photosensitivity features work only when the player using the mod is the host. This means client-side installation should not be assumed to provide identical coverage when joining somebody else’s lobby.

This makes the feature specific to the moddable PC version of R.E.P.O.. The official Steam listing currently gives Windows 10 as the minimum operating system and Windows 11 as the recommended one. The mod is not a console accessibility option, and its Thunderstore page does not document support for other operating systems.

Third-party modifications also carry maintenance considerations that built-in settings usually do not. R.E.P.O. remains in Early Access, so game updates can change effects, enemies, items, or internal code. A mod may temporarily stop working, miss newly introduced content, or require an update after the game changes. The required mod loader adds another compatibility layer. Other installed mods may alter the same visual, camera, or audio systems, potentially producing conflicts or unexpected results. Why reduced triggers do not guarantee an “epilepsy-safe” game

The mod’s title is stronger than the evidence available from its documentation. Its developer provides an extensive list of altered effects and says it was developed and tested in collaboration with AnEpilepticGamer, who is credited for experience with photosensitive and musicogenic epilepsy, and MaeDawn, who is credited for motion sensitivity. That collaboration is meaningful, but it cannot establish universal safety.

Photosensitive reactions vary between individuals. Risk can be affected by flash frequency, brightness contrast, color, the portion of the visual field involved, viewing distance, display size, and combinations of effects. The absence of a familiar strobe does not demonstrate that every sequence remains below a recognized flash threshold.

The distinction is visible in formal accessibility guidance. The W3C’s explanation of flashing-content thresholds considers the number of flashes, their area, changes in relative luminance, and saturated red transitions. It also notes that viewing distance and magnification can influence how much of a person’s visual field an effect occupies. A list of modified effects is therefore not equivalent to instrumented testing of every possible gameplay sequence and display configuration.

The mod’s own documentation appropriately advises photosensitive players to examine the game’s graphics settings before playing. It also acknowledges partial host-dependent coverage. These cautions are incompatible with interpreting “safe” as an absolute promise.

A more precise description is that the mod reduces many known or anticipated photosensitivity, motion-sensitivity, and musicogenic triggers. It may substantially change a player’s exposure, but it cannot establish that no triggering content remains.

Combining the mod with other settings and precautions

The mod can be combined with the game’s own graphics and audio settings rather than used as a replacement for them. Reducing or disabling available post-processing options may address effects outside the mod’s itemized patches. Adjusting brightness, resolution, display size, and viewing distance may change the intensity or visual-field coverage of remaining effects, although these adjustments should not be treated as guarantees either.

Players who need the audio modifications may also want to lower or mute music, as the mod developer recommends, and balance voice chat against environmental sound. Turning down master volume alone reduces every sound equally; it does not selectively remove a problematic drone and may make useful cues or teammates harder to hear.

For motion-related barriers, a stable frame rate may be relevant alongside the mod’s removal of camera overrides and deliberately choppy effects. The mod does not promise to prevent performance-related judder, latency, or frame-rate drops caused by the computer, networking, or another modification.

Testing should begin in a controlled context where possible. A trusted teammate can preview unfamiliar content, and players who require the host-dependent changes can establish the lobby themselves. Because R.E.P.O. uses procedural situations, equipment combinations, and unpredictable enemy encounters, testing one room cannot confirm that every later event has been covered.

What the mod does not solve

Epilepsy Safe R.E.P.O. does not remove the game’s horror premise, surprise encounters, darkness, time pressure, physics-based object handling, or reliance on spatial navigation. It does not provide captions for every important sound, convert audio cues into visual indicators, simplify multiplayer communication, or add comprehensive remapping and alternative-input support.

It also does not appear to replace all particles or animation with static alternatives. Its published changelist identifies a large collection of modified effects, but that list should be read as the documented scope rather than proof of total sensory coverage. New content may introduce effects that were not present when the current version was tested.

The project is best understood as a legitimate community accessibility intervention with unusually detailed, event-specific coverage. The original Epilepsy Safe R.E.P.O. Thunderstore page provides the current dependency, version, changelist, multiplayer warning, and development credits and should be checked before installation.

Access needs and triggers vary considerably. This mod may reduce many visual, vestibular, and audio barriers in R.E.P.O., but its partial host dependence, third-party compatibility risks, evolving Early Access target, and lack of guaranteed trigger-free coverage remain important practical limits.
