How Street Fighter 6’s Dynamic Controls Choose Moves From Simple Inputs

Street Fighter 6 includes three control types: Classic, Modern, and Dynamic. Classic Controls retain the series’ traditional six attack buttons and directional commands. Modern Controls reduce the number and complexity of inputs while preserving substantial control over which move is performed. Dynamic Controls go further by allowing the game to select context-appropriate attacks from simple button presses.

With Dynamic Controls, pressing an attack button can produce a standard attack, special move, combination, or other response chosen according to the current situation. The system considers factors such as the player’s character, the opponent, and the distance between them. It can also move the character toward the opponent when necessary.

This changes the player’s role more significantly than ordinary input simplification. The player decides when to press a button, but the game takes responsibility for selecting and executing much of the specific offensive response. Dynamic Controls can reduce complex command, sequencing, timing, and reach demands, but the system is restricted to selected offline modes and cannot be used for online matches or the World Tour campaign.

Traditional fighting-game inputs combine several demands

A conventional fighting-game move may require a precise directional motion followed by an attack button. Other techniques involve simultaneous buttons, rapid sequences, charge timing, links between attacks, or different strengths of the same move. The player must remember the command, produce it accurately, and choose an appropriate moment to use it.

These demands are related but separate. A player may understand that an anti-air attack is appropriate yet be unable to perform its directional command quickly. Another player may execute individual moves but have difficulty remembering combinations. Limited reach, dexterity, hand strength, coordination, reaction time, fatigue, tremor, pain, or cognitive load may affect different parts of the process.

Remapping can move a command to a more reachable button, but it does not shorten the directional sequence used to perform the technique. An alternative controller may improve physical access, but it does not automatically reduce the number of actions that must be coordinated. Lowering the opponent’s difficulty may reduce pressure without changing the player’s own input requirements.

Dynamic Controls alter the command structure itself. Instead of expecting the player to select and execute every move directly, the system interprets simpler inputs in relation to the fight’s current state.

The system chooses according to context

Dynamic Controls are described as selecting suitable actions according to the player’s character, the opponent, and the distance between them. A button press at close range may therefore produce a different response from the same press at long range.

Distance is especially important in a fighting game. A short attack may miss an opponent standing farther away, while a long-reaching move may be slower or less suitable at close range. Some characters have projectiles, advancing attacks, throws, or defensive tools designed for particular positions.

Dynamic Controls reduce the need to know which exact button or command corresponds to each distance. The system can select among standard attacks, special moves, and combinations that it considers appropriate for the current situation. It may also advance the character toward the opponent rather than requiring the player to manage every movement input separately.

The system is not limited to replaying one fixed combination. Its response can change as the characters’ relative positions and circumstances change. This context sensitivity distinguishes Dynamic Controls from mapping a complete combo to a single button.

Simplification and automation are not the same

Street Fighter 6’s Modern Controls simplify execution while leaving more move selection with the player. Modern Controls use light, medium, and heavy attacks, a dedicated Special Move button, and an Assist input that can help produce predetermined combinations. A player can perform selected special moves with a button and direction instead of the traditional directional command.

Modern Controls still ask the player to choose among attack strengths, special moves, defensive systems, movement, and other techniques. The system shortens many commands, but the player generally determines which category of action is requested.

Dynamic Controls transfer more of that choice to the game. The player supplies an attack input, and the system determines a suitable response. That is automation of move selection, not simply a shorter command for the same manually selected move.

This difference can support players who need more assistance than Modern Controls provide. It also means the player has less control over the exact action performed. Someone who can execute simplified commands and wants to make detailed tactical decisions may prefer Modern Controls even if Dynamic requires fewer inputs.

Dynamic Controls do not automatically play the entire match

The system’s automatic move selection should not be confused with automatic match completion. The player must still participate by pressing buttons and responding to the fight. The opponent continues to attack, block, reposition, and apply pressure.

Dynamic Controls may select a strong action for the current distance, but they do not guarantee that the attack will connect. An opponent can block, interrupt, evade, counterattack, or change position. The chosen action may also be less suitable than a move an experienced player would have selected manually.

The player still needs to decide when to act. Repeatedly pressing an attack button without regard to the opponent does not guarantee success. Defence, timing, health management, positioning, and recognising opportunities remain relevant, even though some of these demands may be reduced by the system.

Dynamic therefore occupies a position between direct control and automatic play. It delegates move selection and execution while preserving enough player input for the match to remain interactive.

Automatic movement changes positioning demands

According to the game director’s explanation, Dynamic Controls can move the player’s character toward the opponent when an attack is selected. This helps prevent simple inputs from repeatedly producing actions that cannot reach the target.

Automatic approach may reduce the need to coordinate directional movement with attack commands. It may support players who have difficulty operating a directional control and attack buttons at the same time, rapidly switching between movement and techniques, or judging the correct range for each move.

The system does not provide unrestricted automatic navigation. It is designed around the relationship between two fighters inside a match. It does not navigate menus, explore World Tour, or independently manage every positional decision.

Automatic advancement can also create trade-offs. Moving closer is not always strategically desirable. An experienced player may want to maintain distance, wait for an opponent to approach, or deliberately use a move that Dynamic does not select. Assistance with reaching the opponent can therefore reduce direct control over spacing.

Possible motor-access benefits

Dynamic Controls may reduce the number of buttons, directional motions, simultaneous actions, and rapid sequences required to produce effective attacks. This may support players with limited dexterity, reduced range of motion, limb differences, coordination disabilities, pain, fatigue, tremor, or difficulty maintaining precise repeated inputs.

The mode can also reduce dependence on six individually accessible attack buttons. Traditional controls distinguish between three punch strengths and three kick strengths, while special moves may require additional directional commands. A simplified input model may make more of the game physically reachable on a standard controller or a custom setup with fewer available switches.

However, Dynamic Controls do not remove every motor demand. The player still presses buttons repeatedly during a match, and some movement or defensive interaction may remain. The system is not documented as converting repeated attacks into sustained holds.

It also does not guarantee compatibility with every adaptive controller. A reduced command set can make hardware configuration easier, but physical-device support, platform recognition, remapping, and switch access remain separate considerations.

Possible cognitive-access benefits

A fighting-game roster contains many character-specific attacks, commands, ranges, and combinations. Remembering these while monitoring an opponent can create substantial working-memory and decision-making demands.

Dynamic Controls may reduce the need to recall each command and immediately match it to the current distance. The game performs part of that selection process. This can allow the player to focus more on the opponent’s movement, the overall rhythm of the match, or the simple relationship between pressing an attack and seeing a useful response.

The system may also support introductory play without requiring a lengthy period of command memorisation. Game director Takayuki Nakayama described Dynamic Controls as enabling younger children and people new to fighting games to have a functional match.

That stated audience does not define everyone who may benefit. A control type designed for beginners can also reduce barriers for disabled players. At the same time, it should not be assumed that every player with cognitive access needs wants decisions automated. Some may prefer predictable one-button mappings where the same input always produces the same move.

Because Dynamic responses change with context, the system may actually be less predictable for someone who relies on consistent cause and effect. Pressing the same button and receiving different attacks at different distances can reduce memorisation while increasing uncertainty about the result.

The mode preserves timing rather than removing it

Dynamic Controls reduce execution complexity, but fighting still occurs in real time. The opponent’s attacks, recovery windows, movement, and defensive actions continue at normal speed.

A player may need to decide when to press, when to stop attacking, or when to respond defensively. The system does not function like a turn-based mode, and it does not pause the match while the player chooses an action.

This makes Dynamic Controls different from a game-speed adjustment. Slowdown gives the player additional time while retaining more direct responsibility for selecting and executing moves. Dynamic Controls retain the normal pace while reducing the complexity of the requested action.

Players who need both fewer inputs and more processing time may still encounter barriers. The game does not combine Dynamic Controls with unrestricted online use or a universal slowdown system for competitive matches.

The offline restriction substantially limits participation

Dynamic Controls are available only in restricted offline contexts, including single-player Arcade fights and local Versus play. They cannot be selected for online matches and are not available throughout World Tour.

This is more than a competitive-balance detail. Online play is a major part of modern fighting games. It allows players to compete with friends who are not physically present, join a wider community, and continue playing when local multiplayer is impractical.

A player who depends on Dynamic Controls may therefore be able to fight the computer or someone in the same room but not use the same access method against a remote friend. The restriction creates a boundary between access to the basic match system and access to the game’s broader social and competitive environment.

World Tour’s exclusion also means Dynamic Controls do not provide a route through the full single-player campaign. That mode involves exploration, conversations, progression, and battles using a custom avatar. A player who can participate in isolated Dynamic matches may still be unable to use the system in the game’s narrative mode.

Modern Controls have much broader availability, including online competition, but they require more direct move selection and execution. Modern is therefore not a complete substitute for a player who specifically needs Dynamic’s context-sensitive automation.

Restrictions prevent continuity between control types

Control familiarity is often built through repetition. A player learns how inputs behave, develops reliable timing, and gradually understands the relationship between decisions and results. When one control type is unavailable in major modes, that learning cannot transfer seamlessly.

A player using Dynamic in local matches must switch to Modern or Classic to enter World Tour or play online. That change restores commands, choices, and execution demands the player may have selected Dynamic to avoid.

The restriction may also affect shared play. Two people can use local Versus for an accessible match when they are together, but the same pairing cannot continue remotely with the identical control arrangement.

Dynamic Controls therefore provide accessible participation in a bounded activity rather than universal access to Street Fighter 6. They open a particular form of fighting-game play while leaving substantial parts of the product outside their coverage.

Availability and practical limits

Street Fighter 6 is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Control availability can depend on the selected game mode rather than the hardware platform alone.

Capcom’s official description of the three control types identifies Classic, Modern, and Dynamic as separate ways to approach the combat system. The distinction is important: Classic preserves full traditional execution, Modern simplifies commands while retaining broader choice, and Dynamic uses the current situation to select attacks from simpler input.

Dynamic Controls do not guarantee victory, eliminate real-time timing, prevent damage, automate an entire match, or make every mode available. They may substantially reduce command and decision demands in supported offline fights, but their context-dependent behavior, repeated-input requirements, reduced tactical control, and exclusion from online and World Tour play remain significant limitations.

Access needs vary, and some players may prefer Dynamic’s assistance while others need the predictability or expanded control of Modern or Classic. The feature offers a highly simplified route into selected matches, not a universally available control system for the whole game.
